News that Rockstar has suspended work on Red Dead Redemption Online content to focus on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game has delighted gamers everywhere.
Barely a day goes by without someone on Twitter vocalizing how much they want a new GTA game, and with good reason. GTA V dropped in September 2013, 3221 days ago; there were only 2381 days between GTA III, the first open-world experience, and GTA IV. The game’s longevity is proven by the fact it has spanned the seventh, eighth and ninth generation of consoles and has had more updates than any other game currently in circulation. It’s a gaming behemoth, but it’s beginning to feel dated.
That’s where GTA VI comes in. A recent leak has suggested we’re returning to Vice City, but with the sort of upgrades only a PlayStation 5 or Xbox S/X series can deliver. That means better graphics and added depth to the release, including a better casino.
The Diamond Resort and Casino has been a key part of the GTA Online experience since it opened in July 2019. It has acted as a hub for players, spinning the Wheel of Fortune daily and trying to up their in-game currency. The recent leak around GTA VI suggests an improved casino experience, but what will that look like?
GTA Online boasts a handful of classic casino games such as Roulette and Blackjack. It has limitations, as demonstrated by poker; it only had three-card poker, whilst Red Dead Redemption 2 boasted a more popular variant. It’s widely accepted that Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker variant worldwide, and it seems we’re finally going to get that version in GTA VI. There’s also talk of video poker, which suggests we might be in a modern-day Vice City rather than the eighties setting. We’re also told to expect craps, dominoes and baccarat, which will complete a full house of casino games for players.
Spinning the wheel has become a daily task for GTA grinders, but often the prizes are low-key. 10% of clothes you don’t want to buy isn’t a great incentive, and recently some of the top prize cars have been less than desirable. We’d expect to see bigger prizes in Vice City, based on the flash, fast-paced city of Miami. Perhaps there will be boats, increased in-game currency prizes and even free spins or hands of poker to keep people playing. It’s expected the game model will be based around microtransactions, purchasing in-game currency to improve your character’s fortunes, and if that is the case, then the casino will be a key market driver for Rockstar.
The Diamond Resort and Casino was designed for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and whilst it still feels good today, the new casino will be completely different. The graphical capabilities of the new machines mean we expect a glistening building, brimming with life and hopefully variety. You can walk into the current casino and find the same character models in the same places, whereas a new casino should feel different. Perhaps the clientele will change day and night; there could be live shows for you to enjoy, and we expect a fully customizable penthouse with more interior design options than you’ll find at your local Home Depot.
