There are millions of people all across the world that live with asthma. Asthma is a common condition that occurs in both children and adults. It causes the contraction of the airways, which affects the respiratory system. People that live with asthma have to be very careful.

An asthma attack can start from wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness, and it is usually just the beginning. Although it is perceived that asthma can be managed with an inhaler, asthma can be a lot more complex than you may think. More than 400,000 people died due to asthma attacks in 2019.

Asthma attacks can have severe consequences if not controlled in time. Whether you want to start a physical activity or travel abroad, you must consult your healthcare provider before making the right call.

Here are a few lifesaving self-care tips for people living with asthma.

    Identify the Triggers

For an average person, a coughing spell can pass with the help of a soother or a glass of water. However, for an asthma patient, coughing and wheezing are warning signs of something worse. An asthma attack can be highly uncomfortable and painful.

The most common asthma triggers may be smoke, allergens, pet dander, or strong scents. However, a person with asthma cannot always live with the fear of an attack. Instead, identifying symptoms can be more beneficial for the patients.

An ideal practice would be to note down all these symptoms so you can discuss them with your urgent care provider later. Once your doctor helps you identify the root cause, you can avoid and control the triggers.

    Find the Right Medication

It is never a good idea to ignore your doctor’s suggestions, especially if you have asthma. You must never consider skipping asthma medication if you have not faced an asthma attack in a while. Asthma is not a short-lived disease that will go away on its own.

It’s a long-term condition that needs to be managed as per the direction of your healthcare providers. You can always use a probiotic lollipop to fight off the allergens. However, always keep the two major types of asthma medication nearby.

    Controller Medication

Controller medication helps prevent asthma attacks by relaxing the airway muscles. It also helps by making your airway less reactive to common triggers.

    Quick Relief Medication

As the name suggests, quick-relief medication helps when a person is undergoing an asthma attack. Such medication is not needed that often. However, it would be best if you kept it by your side.

    Keep Your Bed Clean

A bed is the most comfortable place for every person. After a long day, all you may want to do is crash on your sheets. However, asthma patients cannot enjoy this bliss without being careful either. Since beds are open surfaces, they can be ideal for dust and mites to settle.

Therefore, to prevent an asthma attack, make sure that you wash your bedding in lukewarm water to clean it thoroughly. You can also consider professional mattress and carpet cleaning from time to time to ensure your safety Read more
